Moving Advice

Here are a number of things to consider before your move:

Make a plan of your home; Draw a layout of your new home and mark up the rooms so that you can show your moving team ahead of delivery.

Packing and unpacking; If you have decided to do your own packing then be sure to use strong enough cartons and ensure they are not overfilled. If you should need cartons + parcel tape please contact us, we hold these items in stock.

Dismantle furniture; Be sure to dismantle self-assembly furniture, take down all curtains, fixtures and fittings prior to the arrival of your moving team.

Clothing; For packing clothes we can offer you wardrobe hanging cartons which enable you to take your clothes off the rail in your wardrobe and straight onto the rail in the hanging carton for easy transportation and less creasing.

Cookers, washing machines, fridges & freezers; These should all be disconnected, cleaned, drained and dried prior to the arrival of your moving team. To avoid damage, the drums of automatic washing machines must be secured with the proper brackets supplied by the manufacturer.

Attics and lofts; Ensure all items that are in your loft are sorted and placed in an accessible room. Our staff will not be permitted into your attic unless it is well illuminated and boarded and there is a safe point of entry.

Contents of garages & garden sheds; These should be organised well in advance, and tools must be cleaned, tied together and any rubbish should be discarded.

Access; Access to and from the doorway of your home is critical for our vehicles. Explain to neighbours in advance that a large removal vehicle will be parked outside your home and prepare them for any inconvenience. This also applies to the delivery address.

Storage; Set aside an area/box marked 'Do Not Remove' for personal effects that you might need on the day. Including important documents which you will need to keep with you.

Packing Tips

Before your start packing we suggest that you take a look around and decide what needs to be taken, you might have some old items which you may not want any longer, in which case this may be the time to either take them to the tip, or sell them, it would be a good idea to do this in advance of moving so as not to be in a panic near the time.

Please remember to label your cartons clearly, marking on them which rooms they need to go in when moved.

When you fill cartons, remember to use sensible sized cartons which won’t be too heavy to carry, and use heavy duty parcel tape to stop them coming open. Make sure not to overload cartons , and where possible tape the lid flat; if you are packing breakable items please mark the carton ‘Fragile’ and ‘This Way Up’.

When packing very fragile items such as china and glass it’s always a good idea to line the carton with shredded newspaper and wrap pieces individually in tissue to help them travel without breakage.

Plates and records travel best if they are stood on their side, do not pack flat.

If you should need cartons and parcel tape, please call us, we hold these items in stock at very favourable prices.

For packing clothes we can offer you wardrobe hanging cartons which enable you to take your clothes off the rail in your wardrobe straight onto the rail in the hanging carton for easy transportation and less creasing. Generally chest of drawers can be moved full.

Should you be uncertain about packing yourself, why not let us do the packing for you, give us a call for a free quotation. This solution helps cut down on risk of damage, and also helps to relieve you another big job during this busy time.

On the Day of Removal

Make the day as stress-free as possible by asking someone to look after young children for the day.

Remember to defrost the freezer at least the day before.

Get the fixtures and fittings you're taking with you down in plenty of time. You don't want to be struggling to take down shelves at the last minute.

Make sure the gas, electricity, and water meters are read and arrange for your final telephone bill or number transfer before you leave.

Set aside an area marked "DO NOT REMOVE" for personal documents, coats, handbags, kettle, snacks, tools and cleaning materials you might need on the day. Better still, put them in the car for safe keeping.

If you have pets, make arrangements in advance of how you intend transport them.

If no-one is moving into your old property immediately, remember to turn everything off, make sure the house is secure, and hand the keys over to your estate agent.

It may seem obvious, but make sure that your removal crew has directions to your new property and a telephone number where you can be contacted. Agree an approximate time of arrival.

Before the removal lorry leaves, check that nothing has been forgotten and make sure that nothing is moved that should be staying behind.
